Magic dinner Show and other updates

Hi Everyone!

As Eugene Burger once said ” Close up magic is a form without a venue”, referring to a lack of venues (other than cocktail receptions and restaurants table hopping, maybe parties) for the full charm and artistry of formal close up magic to be experienced by the audience. And today i made one up.

As one growing up watching L and L magic tapes and watching performances at the magic castle from a faraway land, it always made me envious of the idea of a close up show, which is almost hardly seen here. Performing in America opened my eyes to the world of dinner theatres and i decided to bring this back to Singapore.

In September, we did it. A three course dinner and full evening entertainment, we had a sell out show on the 6th of September ,other than 2 that had last minute things that came up. And everyone loved the show and are asking when is the next show.

Many thanks to Cafe Football Singapore for the support and help, Shushannah Lee Derrick Goh for helping with the organising and Simon Tan for always having faith in my magic. And Nigel Lew and Dylan Tay for being part of it :)
I dreamt of a big dream on a small stage, and the dream came true.

We will be having the next show on 11th Oct, and seats can be reserved here:

Some other updates:

October will be really busy, preparing for a Halloween show at the end of the month. Tomorrow i will be doing some filming with LOVE 97.2 Radio for their facebook content again :)

The busy end of the year season is here! Looking forward to what lies in front!

Till next time..

Ming Da

Updates from America!

Greetings from America!

Decided to post some updates as i am at the halfway point of my “tour”, turns out this is going to be a long post :)

America has been awesome so far, I have completed shows in Chicago, New York and New Mexico and currently in Las Vegas awaiting my next performance.

First show always takes some nerves and i felt a bit of that on my first at the Magic Chicago Show, but all was good and it was an honour performing alongside Bill Cook and George A. Bradley.Managed to watch a great show “Cerebral Sorcery” by Francis Menotti and David london which set me off thinking of many ideas as well.

The highlight in Chicago was being able to perform at the Chicago Magic Lounge, which was originally not part of the plan! I was just there to check out the place. And WOW,the exquisite, magical venue just breathes magic. If there is a place that is competing with magic castle to be the mecca of magic, this is it. I was asked to do a short bar set on the Thursday that i was visiting and the response was so well that the owner asked me back on Saturday to work the tables! There was so much magic history in Chicago that i learnt about in those few days, i wish i had more time! Going from a visitor to performing at the bar and doing the tables today, and hanging out with the guys at the backroom for an old style Chicago magic session, Chicago was a great experience.

Here are some photos from the lounge:

Part of my bar set:

New York was interesting, the city of business and happenings. I performed on the Monday Night Magic Show as a special guest alongside an extraordinary cast including Peter Samuelson, Alex Boyce and Todd Robbins who was the host for the night. Performing in theatres has taught me a lot in terms of staging and technicalities of theatre , as we do not have many theatres back home that we can easily have regular magic shows, as of course watching the other magicians take the stage with their acts. I only had a couple of days in New York, so i mainly visited Times Square and The Statue of Liberty, and Tannen’s magic shop! Tannen’s is one of the best magic shops around, i managed to catch up with Magick Baley and hang around the shop to soak in the New York Magic Scene. I also managed to watch one of the deepest and most mind-blowing magic show i have seen. “In and of Itself” by Derek Delgaudio. In fact, it is so much more than a magic show. All i can is, if you get a chance to be in a city where the show is on, do not hesitate, GO FOR IT.

Here are some photos from New York:

I only had 4 days in New York and flew down to New Mexico, Albuquerque.

My host at Albuquerque was Max Krause, he is a creator in magic and i managed to see many of his creations in action. Max owns a magic shop and theatre of his own and i performed 2 close up shows and 2 stage shows over my weekend there. Albuquerque is a small city but a beautiful one. The shows we had were intimate and a really fun crowd.

And many thanks to Max for the hospitality!

And right now, i am looking forward to the rest of the trip and adventure!

Till next time, magically yours,

Hi there all you lovely people!

Time flies and almost a quarter of the year is going to be over. It has been a busy few months since the start of the year and i had not have the time to sit down to write. So, here is a quick update of what i have been up to.

So what have i been busy with? Firstly, it will be shows. Have been really busy and will be so up till the end of next week. One of the fun shows was performing for a wedding in Krabi, Thailand! Look at photo of the beautiful scenery below (Just one of the many!):

Other than bring busy with shows, i have been busy with a few projects as well, here it goes! I am really excited for a few things that will be unfolding in the next few months:

1) I will be performing weekly regular magic at 3 more new restaurant venues! Will be bringing a magical experience to these new venues :)

2) MAY-hem America Performance tour! I will be performing in various cities in America in the month of May, more details coming soon!

3) A brand new formal close up show, this will be a public ticketed event! Currently in the process of finding a venue and finalising the show.

Thats all for now, will be posting more updates on each of the 3 points above as the time draws nearer. Meanwhile, here is a short magic trick for you:

Ming Da

Good bye 2016, Towards 2017!

Firstly, i really wanted to post something before 2016 ended but i was too busy with 3 shows on the last day. 2016 has been great and my busiest year so far. I can only imagine it getting better and will be working hard towards achieving new goals and milestones.

A big thank you to every direct client, repeat clients and event companies and partners for your support in 2016, more to come in 2017~
Thank you to every feature i got on both online and printed media: Vulcan Post, The New paper, BBC Radio, LOVE 97.2 , JTV

And lastly a special shout out to my regular gigs: Beer Market (Past) , 555 Villa Thai, and The Royal Albatross!

Some things to look forward to in 2017 include putting out a new show (maybe 2!), a possible new online series on another platform, and more international performances. Have received a couple of possible opportunities to go overseas, but nothing cast in stone yet, so we’ll see how it goes!

Here are some photos from my last days of 2016:

Happy New Year! Stay Magical!

Interview and performance on LOVE 97.2 live radio at Compass one

Hi all!

I had the opportunity to talk about my life as a magician and performed for the DJs and live audience on Love 972 at Compass One this week! It was a fun time and the DJs and crowd was very spontaneous and fun! I did a special magic effect for the DJs in celebration of the station’s birthday and also taught everyone there a simple coin trick.

Here are some photos from the event:

The full interview and performance video:

I had a lot of fun and so did everyone there, hope you will enjoy it as well!

Why do people hate magic?

Imagine this scenario:

‘Hi! I am the magician hired for the event, would you like to see some magic?’

‘a….no thank you, we don’t like magic’

Let me tell you that this is not a made up situation but a very real scenario that many magicians have met with. As a professional magician, i am very aware that magicians are viewed as geeky and nerdy to some people.Everyone has different perceptions of magic. Some people only think of a magician at a kid’s party when you mention a magician, which is far from the truth. Try this out, ask a friend to describe a magician. Often they will describe someone dressed in a top hat, rabbits and doves, or even better- someone in a bright clown-liked costume. And it doesn’t help that there are magicians that still follow and dress this way. I do not want to point out anyone in my local market in particular or say that it is wrong, but personally, it is not the image i want me or my magic to project. I perform for corporate events, weddings and private parties and i definitely do not look like what you would imagine a magician would look like above. And yet when i perform, i still have people saying to me ‘I hate magic’

But here’s the thing:

You see the reason that people say they hate magic is the same reason magic is portrayed in a bad light in the media (Watch the Amazing Burt Wonderstone movie, its hilarious). That reason is us magicians. Don’t get me wrong. There are many magicians who are really good, many that i count as friends. However, there are also many who are still stuck in the old fashion times.

You will be able to spot these performers easily. They are the ones with a magic wand or top hat or bunny on their business card. They are the ones that have little social skills and don’t really speak well and within seconds of performing immediately act like they are better than you. The problem is magic is one of the industries whereby you can get some magic props, within a month print some business cards calling yourself a professional magician. Confession time:been there, done that. Now, this may be the way some of us start out. But a professional magician should definitely grow out of this as he matures in his entertainment career. Having said that, there are many magicians that have been around for years an should have quit years ago.

Whatever people have seen or experienced in person is what they attach to it. Unfortunately, this means that if that experience is bad…most likely it will be what they associate with magic.

Once that idea is cemented, nothing can change their mindset except having a different experience.

Now, this means that i have the chance to make the person fall in love with magic again. To change their perceptions, all i have to do is to perform for them once. After that, not only will they be able to appreciate the magic but most importantly they see my skills in interacting with people, engaging the crowd’s attention, and create a genuine connection between us while having fun and being amazed at the same time.

So what do I do as a magician to change perceptions?

ASK – Every client has a preconceived notion of my product or service. I must discover what shaped that experience and created that perception. If the client trusts me, they will tell me why that previously negative experience has impacted them to believe what they do now.

ACKNOWLEDGE – People don’t like to have their opinions challenged or ignored. I need to acknowledge their past experience and understand why they have the perception they do. If possible,i will ask deeper questions so that i can get a more complete understanding of their perceptions.

ASSIST – Help them see the future. A show reel is helpful in doing this. I will try to ask them to describe the ideal scenario that they wish when engaging my services because they cannot see what i do. Other than watching a show reel, it is important that they see a new picture and get a new understanding of what’s possible. I will assist them in imagining things the way they have never imagined them before.

This in its essence is a sales-process. By doing these with patience, providing helpful information along the way, i hope that the client will make the leap of faith for my services and be able to change the perception they have for magic.

As a professional entertainer, my goal when i perform is to make sure they are left with a good impression of both me and magic in a whole. As a full-time business owner, I take pride in communicating to my clients exactly what they should expect and change any negative perceptions they might have about magic.

If you think magic is terrible there is a very good chance you might be wrong and i would like to help you change that perception. And if you are booking a magician for your event make sure you book a magician that is going create a memorable experience for your guests for the right reasons. Drop me a mail or give me a call here and i will be glad to assist you.

Magically yours,
Ming Da
